Penguin Computing Advances Open Compute Project Technical Leadership, Technology Platforms and Customer Adoption

The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) selecting Penguin Computing’s Tundra Extreme Scale (ES) series for one of the world’s largest OCP-based installations. This procurement under NNSA’s tri-laboratory Commodity Technology Systems program, or CTS-1, bolsters critical computing for national security at Los Alamos, Sandia and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories and was a major step forward for OCP product credibility.
Penguin Computing and YJ America teamed for deployment of YJ America’s OpenStack infrastructure on Penguin Computing’s Relion OCP servers as part of its next generation data center infrastructure. An important element of this collaboration was Penguin Computing’s role as an active member in the OCP community and background as a pioneer in Linux systems.
Bloomberg L.P., the international financial software, data and media company, engaged Penguin Computing with its rack supplier AFCO to implement OCP solutions for Bloomberg’s data centers. The focus of this collaboration is for Penguin’s Tundra sleds and trays in Bloomberg/AFCO (BOAR) racks, which were recently exhibited at the 2016 OCP Summit. Bloomberg, an early advocate of the OCP philosophy, expects benefits of flexibility, density and cost savings through OCP implementation in its data centers.
Stony Brook University selected Penguin Computing based on several key factors, including the OCP benefits of easy extensibility, rack density and competitive cost structure. Density is a critical element due to space considerations and convenient serviceability, from the cold aisle, is extremely beneficial. The new “Seawulf” cluster entails 156 compute nodes and supports a wide range of applications for university professors and students in a dynamic learning environment. SBU sees the OCP design as the platform of the future, enabling them to reduce operational costs while taking advantage of the diversity of systems to come in the future.

- A variety of compute and storage form factors: Relion Phi 1030 with single socket Intel® Xeon® Phi™ for HPC workloads; Relion 1930 E/G featuring dual socket Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 v3/v4 for HPC and general workloads; and IceBreaker 1906g with single socket Intel® Xeon® Processor D for distributed storage
Penguin Computing’s aggressive OCP strategy is reflected in its rapidly increasing revenue from such designs. A majority of the company’s 2016 revenues will come from OCP-based solutions.
