The study focusing on “buzzed driving” was organized by sociologist David Philips of the University of California, San Diego, according to U.S. News & World Report. As part of the study, researchers examined more than 570,700 fatal auto accidents nationwide between 1994 and 2011. The researchers then focused their attention on accidents involving drivers with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.01 to 0.07, News & World Report reported. The legal limit BAC limit is 0.08 in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and many other states.
According to the study, drivers who had a BAC of 0.01 were 46 percent more likely to be officially blamed for causing an accident than sober drivers, U.S. News & World Report reported. And the higher a driver’s BAC, the more likely the driver would cause a fatal auto accident, according to U.S. News & World Report.
"We find no safe combination of drinking and driving - no point at which it is harmless to consume alcohol and get behind the wheel of a car," Phillips said in a university news release quoted by U.S. News & World Report.
