Periodontists Discuss NYU Study's Link Between Harmful Oral Bacteria and Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer is among the most deadly forms of cancer because it can spread quickly without causing noticeable symptoms until the most advanced stages. The disease typically has a poor prognosis whether or not it is diagnosed early. According to the NYU study, it has been well documented that patients with pancreatic cancer were also more likely to develop gum disease and other oral health issues; however, the exact link was not known. The researchers were able to identify the exact oral bacteria, including Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans that represent a likely risk factor for cancer of the pancreas. These harmful bacteria are directly linked to inflammation of the gums, gum disease, and periodontitis.
“The study give us an even clearer picture of the role that oral hygiene has for our overall health,” added Dr. Krivitsky. “Most people understand that plaque and bacteria can be harmful to our teeth and gums, but they don't realize that this bacteria is not restricted to our mouths. It can enter the bloodstream and increase the chances of getting a harmful illness. We advise our patients with the earliest signs of tooth decay or gum disease to undergo periodontal scaling and root planing to treat the bacteria before it can become severe and can significant damage.”
Periodontal scaling is a process in which calcium and plaque build up along the crown of the tooth is removed to eliminate oral bacteria before it has a chance to worsen. Additionally, root planing is a treatment that targets the bacteria and plaque build up below the gum level where brushing and flossing cannot reach. Combining these cleansing treatments helps reduce existing oral bacteria and make it difficult for bacteria to cling to hard-to-reach places.
