Perkins Eastman Teams Up With Fundación Hogar de Cristo to Build Urbanización San Alberto Hurtado in Guayaquil, Ecuador
New York, NY (PRWEB) February 19, 2015 -- The New York, San Francisco, and Guayaquil offices of Perkins Eastman are pleased to announce that the firm is teaming up with charitable foundation Hogar de Cristo for an ambitious mixed-use development in the western portion of suburban Guayaquil, Ecuador. The final plan for the 122,000 sm site was created by combining the two winning proposals from the firm’s 8th Annual In-House Design Competition, submitted by Intern Architect Justin Skoda, from the San Francisco office, and Urban Planner Isabel Aguirre-Martinez of affiliate BFJ Planning, who works out of the firm’s New York office.
Together, Skoda and Aguirre-Martinez approached this project by posing the question: How does one build a community? The answer derives from searching for the site’s identity, exploring the traditions of public life in this portion of the city, asking what the needs are of its citizens, and finally, looking at how new development can be implemented in a responsible and affordable way. The site, named San Alberto Hurtado, is envisioned by the Perkins Eastman/Hogar de Cristo team to include housing for approximately 460 families, comprising 25 sm homes distributed across several micro neighborhoods. San Alberto Hurtado will also feature various public plazas, park space, office space, commercial and transit connections, and a school and nursery at the site’s Civic Core.
Surrounded by long-standing town settlements, the existing Hogar de Cristo campus will be transformed into a diverse and livable community of neighborhoods, with sustainable urbanization as its focus. Guayaquil city is one of the most interesting cases of urban development in the Latin American context. The implementation of new projects act as catalysts for urban change. As part of this effort, Hogar de Cristo produces social housing and provides integrated services of social development.
Helping lead this effort are two key members of Fundación Hogar de Cristo: Padre Eduardo Vega, who serves as Managing Director and leads the construction of the current facilities of the Hogar de Cristo at Mont Sinai; and Juan Carlos Salame, Director of the Board, Fundación Corporacion Viviendas Hogar de Cristo.
