The son of a Georgia sharecropper, Kelly grew up in the rural South during the Great Depression and World War II. He writes about the constant threat of poverty, the oppressive religious beliefs of his family and the struggles of life in a homophobic, racist society. Readers follow him through service in the Air Force, his college years and his subsequent professional development as an art educator. A world traveler, Kelly also recounts his experiences visiting 46 different countries.
Throughout “Cosmos Screen,” Kelly relates his experiences as a gay man and the double life he was forced to lead. His older brother, also gay, felt the same alienation and faced similar discrimination. The author’s pain of living a secret life, his sexual exploration and the search for companionship are all described without shame, and he posits that bias and prejudice are grounded in a lack of knowledge, maintaining that “education or the inadequacies of education, contributes to or restricts development of healthy lives, including sexual orientation.”
