PetPace Collar Facilitates Critical Post-Op Monitoring in a Dog
Burlington, MA (PRWEB) December 15, 2015 -- PetPace, the provider of an innovative IoT collar for remote real-time monitoring and analysis of pet vital signs and activity, today released the findings of a new medical case study. The new canine case study documents in detail how the PetPace collar lowered the need for post-operative manipulation in a dog following open chest surgery, while still enabling caregivers to accurately and closely monitor vital signs and other key physiological data.
The patient, a five-month-old female Husky puppy named Kira, was presented to the Herzeliya Veterinary Hospital in Israel owing to repeated regurgitations and weight loss. Following an extensive work-up she was diagnosed with a rare vascular anomaly called PRAA.
PRAA, short for Persistent Right Aortic Arch, is a congenital anomaly involving the large blood vessels around the heart. The anatomically abnormal structures cause constriction of the esophagus and prevent solid food from passing into the stomach. PRAA requires corrective surgery to remove the constriction from the esophagus and to allow normal feeding.
Kira was hospitalized to stabilize her condition before surgery, which turned out to be lengthy and complex. A PetPace collar was placed on Kira towards the end of the surgery to help monitor her closely during the difficult post-op period. As can be seen in the chart below, the PetPace collar’s pulse readings closely matched the readings from the anesthesia monitor.
In the following days, vital signs charts from the PetPace collar were displayed in real time on a monitor placed in a central location in the hospital, and played a crucial role in the close supervision that Kira required. Kira’s vitals were mostly within normal limits, as can be seen in the following charts.
Use of the PetPace collar on Kira augmented traditional direct patient assessment by caregivers, enabling them to fill in data gaps between manual measurements. Moreover, since PetPace data is obtained automatically and without human intervention, it better reflected Kira’s true condition.
Using the PetPace collar for non-invasive, intensive medical monitoring provides real-time streaming health data on the patient, helping caregivers continuously assess the clinical condition. Additionally, the PetPace collar reduces the handling and stress associated with frequent manual measurements.
Dr. Asaf Dagan, DVM, Diplomate ABVP (Canine and Feline practice) and PetPace’s Chief Veterinarian noted, “Using the PetPace collar for in-house intensive patient monitoring improves medical care while avoiding the increase in resources that would otherwise be required for frequent manual measurements.”
Dr. Shahar Baruch, owner of Herzliya Veterinary Hospital, Israel, and Kira’s veterinarian added, “We routinely use PetPace collars on our hospitalized pets and project the data in real time on a large screen in a central location in our hospital. Medical staff can thus maintain a higher level of vigilance without either increasing their workload or subjecting patients to excessive handling.”
About PetPace
PetPace was founded in 2012 to bring peace of mind to pet owners and prevent unnecessary pain and suffering for dogs and cats through improved pet health and quality of life. PetPace specializes in the remote monitoring of pet vital signs by utilizing advanced analytical methods and alerting models. The company’s low power, wireless collar is fitted with an array of sensors that report abnormal vital signs within established physiological and behavioral parameters. Once an abnormal sign or behavior is detected, a sophisticated cloud-based analytical engine evaluates the signs and if needed, sends an immediate alert regarding any suspected condition. This allows the owner or the vet to take preemptive action to protect the pet’s health. For more information about PetPace real-time pet health monitoring, visit http://PetPace.com.
