Pharmacists offer advice on how to avoid feeling trapped by wind
London (PRWEB UK) 21 January 2014 -- Trapped wind can be incredibly uncomfortable and even very painful, but there are many ways to treat it or stop it happening in the first place.
The most common symptoms of trapped wind are feeling uncomfortably full after eating, a bloated stomach, flatulence or gurgling noises in the stomach. However, the most frequent cause of trapped wind is diet. (http://bit.ly/19zMH14)
ChemistDirect pharmacist Nada Elia said: “Foods such as beans, broccoli, lentils and onions cannot be easily absorbed and so can cause painful abdominal pains and excessive flatulence.”
As well as food and drink, another cause of trapped wind can be swallowing air. This is very common in babies in their earliest months as they hungrily gasp for air whilst swallowing but adults are just as susceptible if we rush our food. Elia said: “Ways to avoid swallowing wind are by eating more slowly and reducing the amount we put into our mouths at one time.”
There are several natural remedies for trapped wind, one of which is Ginger Capsules. Studies have shown that elements in ginger can help to tone the muscles in the intestine and stimulate the breakdown of food particles. This then helps induce healthy mobility in the gastrointestinal tract and move food through the system faster and smoother. (http://bit.ly/19zMye8)
Another age-old remedy used to help with reducing stomach pains relating to digestive disruption is Peppermint Oil. Peppermint Oil may calm the muscles of the stomach and improve the flow of bile, or stomach acid. This allows food to pass quickly through the stomach and reduces the risk of indigestion.
Elia added: “If the pain becomes unbearable or sickness occurs then it is important to see the doctor as soon as possible as these symptoms could be related to irritable bowel syndrome or something more serious.”
Anyone concerned about their symptoms or in need of treatment advice should visit their pharmacist or GP.
