Pharmacy Advantage: First Specialty Pharmacy in Michigan Utilizing Temperature Monitoring Device to Ensure Medication Quality
Troy, MI (PRWEB) July 17, 2013 -- To ensure patient safety and medication effectiveness, Pharmacy Advantage Specialty Pharmacy is now enclosing a temperature monitoring device called the TransTracker® F Indicator in all heat sensitive or perishable pharmaceutical items delivered to the consumer’s home.
This device monitors and safeguards prescriptions against excessive heat exposure during the delivery process. Although these temperature sensitive medications are routinely shipped using insulated coolers and cold packs, the added indicator functions as an increased precaution to preserve the quality of drug therapy. Patient directions for accurate device interpretation are included in the package. If the medication is subjected to prolonged periods of heat, the monitor will display a red color and customers are advised to contact Pharmacy Advantage immediately for further instructions and possible product replacement.
"At Pharmacy Advantage our team understands that certain specialty medications require specific storage conditions when being shipped to our patients," says Jonathan VanLare, PharmD, RPh, manager of clinical services for Pharmacy Advantage. "Without proper temperature controlled surroundings, prescriptions may be compromised by possibly affecting strength and becoming unsafe to use."
Over a period of time, medications needing cool storage such as Enbrel, Copaxone, and Insulin can lose potency if left unprotected from the suns heat.
Pharmacy Advantage is believed to be the first specialty pharmacy in the Michigan to utilize temperature monitoring technology in temperature sensitive prescription deliveries.
Since the program implementation in April, Daniel Kus, RPh., Vice President of Pharmacy Advantage, noted that "preliminary results from a recent survey found that patients overwhelmingly favor and appreciate this safety measure."
Of the more than 450 participants who completed the questionnaire, 97 percent conveyed they prefer a company that uses the TransTracker® indicator in shipments and that the presence of a monitor enhances their confidence in the security and effectiveness of their prescription.
"We strive to think outside the box when advancing patient care initiatives,” Kus stated. “These measures are intended to support improved patient health, safety, and overall well-being through the distribution of top quality products for successful drug therapy."
