PharmScript Article Prompts Real-Life Account from Long-time RN on Drug Diversion
Edison, NJ (PRWEB) December 23, 2013 -- An article published by leading long-term care pharmacy PharmScript in November offered tips on how healthcare staff can detect, report and address the misuse of pain medications for non-therapeutic purposes in the workplace. The article, which included a list of suspicious activities that may indicate a problem exists, was well-received and prompted a personal account from a RN.
“PharmScript’s article reminded me of two drug diversion instances from the years I worked as a director of nursing,” said Betty MacLaughlin Frandsen, an RN who served as a DON for 14 years. "It was an excellent and much-needed reminder on the importance of training in how to handle instances of drug diversion on the work place."
PharmScript advises that personnel involved in drug diversion cases must handle the issue responsibly on both disciplinary response and offering assistance to nurses caught in addiction. Development of diversion response programs or seminars for health care facilities are encouraged to ensure DONs or administrators are prepared to deal with the issue and respond with compassion.”
