Officials with the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE) told ABC News the increased presence of yellow “Watch for Motorcycles” signs along Pennsylvania highways are a strong sign of support from Pennsylvania officials who aim to raise awareness of motorcyclists along highways and roadways throughout the state.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the state reported a 13 percent decrease in motorcycle accidents from 2012 to 2013. In addition, according to ABC News, fatalities dropped nearly 14 percent. Nationally, the Governors Highway Safety Association reported a 7 percent decrease in 2013 from the prior year.
“Motorcyclists are involved in some of the most catastrophic accidents we see on Pennsylvania roadways,” Flager said. “These accidents happen, despite the fact that most riders are cautious and ride defensively. That’s why it’s so important for the state to stand behind motorcyclists and raise awareness among all motorists that motorcycles are sharing the road.”
Flager said that while lawmakers and cyclists can do their part to prevent accidents, drivers of cars and trucks ultimately share equal responsibility in preventing accidents.
