According to CBS Philly, the Pennsylvania Public Interest Group (PennPIRG) issued its 28th annual report on potentially hazardous children’s toys during the 2013 holiday season, with the goal of educating parents and preventing potentially fatal injuries to children.
“After the holiday season ends, people will continue to buy toys for children. Unfortunately, a dangerous toy can end up in a child’s playroom,” Flager said. “We have handled difficult cases involving injuries to children, which is why we urge parents to be aware of product hazards and recalls.”
Safety activists from PennPIRG told CBS Philly that the annual list, “Trouble in Toyland,” contained products such as Fisher-Price’s “Laugh and Learn” remote, which could potentially damage a child’s hearing, and Hasbro’s “Littlest Pet Shop,” which has small parts that could present a choking hazard to young children.
The CBS Philly article said that PennPIRG’s annual report has led to 150 different product recalls over the past 28 years. According to a Pennsylvania state representative, these recalls have proven to be important to consumers because many children’s toys are not thoroughly inspected before reaching store shelves.
“Unfortunately, manufacturers will sometimes release products to the public without adequately testing these products for safety. Children’s toys are no exception.
