PHIUS 2013 Welcomes Michael Hobbs and Jason La Fluer

Founded in 2007, PHIUS has trained more than 1,000 architects, engineers, energy consultants, energy raters, and builders. It also is the leading certifier of passive buildings, with more than 100 single and multifamily projects certified or in process.
The “passive” in “passive house refers to achieving overall energy savings of 60-70% and 90% of space heating without applying expensive "active" technologies like photovoltaics or solar thermal hot water systems. Energy losses are minimized, and gains are maximized. Superinsulation and air-tight construction minimize losses. The heat/energy recovery ventilator helps keep energy that has already been generated in the house instead of venting it out. Knowing about thermal storage capacity of certain materials and their "passive" effects on the indoor temperature of a home, the architect/designer can plan for enough thermal storage mass in a house by specifying tile floors, finished concrete slabs, concrete or granite countertops, stone fireplace surrounds, adobe walls or earthen plaster.
PHIUS 2013 welcomes Michael Hobbs, SRA, President of PahRoo Appraisal & Consultancy, and Jason La Fleur, Regional Director of Alliance for Environmental Sustainability (AES) to the 8th Annual North American Passive House Conference for Real Estate Appraisal Boot Camp for Passive House.
Drawing upon their extensive experience with high-performance projects, Michael and Jason will highlight what the role of a real estate appraiser is, how a real estate appraiser develops an opinion of market value, and methods to quantify the value contribution of high-performance and energy efficient properties. Michael and Jason will highlight Tom Bassett-Dilley, Brandon Weiss and Eric Barton's, award-winning Lema Residence in River Forest, IL., the first passive house in Illinois. Additionally, Michael will highlight the contribution to value of Lemont's "Green Home" constructed by the carpenter's union and the feature of Built to Last: Season 2.
Michael Hobbs, SRA, RAA, LEED GA, is the President of PahRoo Appraisal & Consultancy, a multi-disciplinary real estate appraisal and consulting firm founded in 2000. Michael holds the SRA designation from the Appraisal Institute, the RAA designation from the National Association of Realtors (NAR), and the LEED GA accreditation from the US Green Building Council (USGBC), additionally he is a board member of the the Chicago Chapter of Entrepreneur Organization. Michael regularly speaks and consults nationally on the topics of valuing energy efficiency, 'green' real estate, and high-performance residential and commercial properties.
Jason La Fleur, LEED AP, is the Regional Director of Alliances for Environmental Sustainability, a non-profit which focuses on education and support for green homes. Jason is an energy rater and he chairs the USGBC's Illinois Chapter Residential Green Building committee and directed the inaugural GreenBuilt Home Tour. Jason is an instructor, consultant and advisor on high-performance and energy efficient homes.
