Phoenix Personal Injury Lawyer at Israel & Gerity, PLLC, Comments on Report about Drowning Accidents in Maricopa County
Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) July 31, 2014 -- Phoenix personal injury attorney Kyle A. Israel of Israel & Gerity, PLLC, today said a recent news report about the number of drowning incidents and fatalities in Maricopa County in 2014 illustrates how quickly a relaxing and fun time by a pool can turn into a tragedy.
According to a Fox 10 News report, 81 drowning and near-drowning incidents, which include 28 fatalities, were reported in Maricopa County between Jan. 1, 2014, and July 8, 2014, when the story was published.
“Drowning accidents can happen in private pools, hotel and motel pools, water parks and many other locations,” Israel said. “If you’re sitting by a pool and your kids are having fun in the water, it can be hard to fathom that a tragic accident can happen in seconds. That’s why you need to closely monitor your child when he or she is in or around a pool. If you’re at a public pool, you should make sure a lifeguard is there to watch the children and adults.”
According to the Fox 10 News article, the Phoenix Fire Department says it responds to multiple calls about pool accidents on a daily basis. Phoenix Fire Department Captain Benjamin Jaminsantillan said the number of near-drowning incidents and water fatalities has reached the point of “crisis.”
The Fire Department stresses the importance of supervision, barriers and classes to swimmers and people who are near pools safe.
Israel said he agrees with the Fire Department’s recommendations, but added that swimming pool injuries and fatalities often can be traced back to the negligent actions of a pool owner or a public pool operator.
“There are many ways that an accident can happen in or around a pool,” Israel said. “A poorly maintained swimming pool drain might trap a child underwater. Sometimes, an unsupervised child might gain access to a swimming pool through a broken face or gate. A lifeguard might be not be paying attention to a child who needs help.”
Israel said anyone who is seriously injured in a pool accident or who loses a loved one should not hesitate to seek the advice of legal counsel.
“Children or adults who survive pool accidents often are permanently disabled,” Israel said. “The injured victim might have suffered brain damage from being underwater too long. In other cases, someone might be permanently paralyzed because of a diving accident that resulted in spinal cord damage. These accidents can result in expensive long-term medical care. An experienced attorney can help pursue the compensation victims and families need and deserve.”
