Piattelli Malbec Scores 90 Points in Wine Spectator
Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) February 24, 2015 -- Piattelli Vineyards’ best-selling wine, the 2012 Premium Reserve Malbec ($15) from Lujàn de Cuyo, received 90 points in the March 31 edition of Wine Spectator. With 15,500 cases produced it is currently available throughout South America and more than a dozen US states.
Wine Spectator Managing Editor Kim Marcus tasted the Malbec twice and wrote consistent notes both times, he said. His tasting notes referenced dried berry, macerated cherry and forest floor influences.
Owned by native Minnesota couple Jon and Arlene Malinski, Piattelli Vineyards produces wines completely in the traditional style of Argentina by a dedicated and award-winning team of renowned Argentine winemakers. Led by Principal Winemaker Valeria Antolin, Piattelli also boasts the leadership of Roberto de la Mota, known around the world for his expertise on Malbec.
The Mendoza vineyards and winery stand at 3,527 feet elevation in Lujàn de Cuyo, Agrelo. A second winery stands on 477 acres of vineyards farther north in Cafayate, Salta. Grapes are tended carefully by hand throughout the growing season and winemaking. They benefit from wide diurnal temperature swings and low rainfall, producing concentrated and complex layers of flavor, while maintaining refreshing acidity.
The grapes for the 2012 Piattelli Premium Reserve Malbec were hand picked and manually sorted, then fermented in 5,000 and 10,000-liter stainless steel tanks. The wine was aged in French and American oak for eight months, then bottle-aged an additional six months.
In December, Piattelli’s super-premium red blend, 2010 vintage Grand Reserve Trinità ($26.99), received 92 points from Wine Spectator and Stephen Tanzer rated the 2013 Premium Torrontés at 90 points. The 2012 Premium Malbec has also received 91 points from the South American wine guide, Descorchados, and 90 points from James Suckling.
