Piedmont Crossing Retirement Community Opens 27-Year-Old Time Capsule
Thomasville, North Carolina (PRWEB) June 20, 2014 -- Opening a time capsule put away 27 years ago brought high emotions and fond memories when a group of current and former leadership recently gathered at Piedmont Crossing Retirement Community to open the capsule from 1987, the year that Piedmont Crossing opened as Piedmont Center.
"We shared our dreams for a retirement community throughout the United Church of Christ (UCC) Conference. With the help of Mrs. Anise Shuler, who donated 49 acres of land, and the seed money raised through the capital campaign, we had enough money to build Davidson County's first retirement community," shared Rev. Dr. Don Flick, who served as CEO of the organization in the 1980's.
Jack Frank, who helped initiate the original project, said he remembers clearing the land that Piedmont Crossing sits on with his heavy equipment. Russ Meyer, who served as the retirement community's first administrator and was employed before the building was complete, gave an emotional recollection of his position including stories of hiring the first employees.
Shuford Abernethy along with several other former administrative staff were excited to share their memories of some of the first residents that moved to Piedmont Crossing. They laughed as they told about their work experiences and mishaps. Ellen Adams, former employee and new resident at Piedmont Crossing, said "We were all just a big family and everyone knew each other by name. It feels good to be back home at Piedmont Crossing as a resident."
As the entire group reminisced over old newspaper clippings, photos, handwritten letters, humorous stories, and snowball fights, the group restocked the time capsule with current items. "My hope is that the group that reopens this capsule 27 years from now has as much fun as we did. I'm sure the world will be a lot different in 2041," said Lee Syria, current CEO of the organization.
