Ping4 Inc.'s App Reveals Addresses, Faces Of Nearby Registered Sex Offenders
Nashua, New Hampshire (PRWEB) April 28, 2014 -- With one touch, users of ping4alerts!, the popular mobile safety app, can view a map-based screen showing precisely where sex offenders live, their name, a physical description, photograph, qualifying offenses, and criminal record – anywhere, anytime.
“This information is readily available on government websites,” said Norm Archer, VP of Marketing. “Our mission is to provide relevant, timely information and to let users take action to protect themselves, particularly children.”
Ping4alerts! is a free iOS and Android app that uses the location based technology inherent in today’s smartphones to deliver notifications within a highly-localized area. Ping4 Inc. protects user anonymity and does not require users to provide any personally identifiable information such as a phone number, street address, or email address.
The app scrapes data directly from various data feeds – such as the National Weather Service, or the state’s sex offender registry website -- and stores a link on the Ping4 Inc. server. The application translates the offender’s last known address into geo-coordinates. Once in proximity to a density of offenders, the user will receive a push notification alerting them and populate a map interface with pins indicating where the offenders live or work, and be linked to the state’s registry website.
Depending on each state’s registry, users are alerted of only Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders. Level 2 offenders have a moderate risk of repeat offense and Level 3 offenders have a high risk of repeat offense and pose a threat to public safety. The duration of Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders requires them to be registered for life.
“The value of our product is its ability to deliver time sensitive, relevant information to our users based solely on location,” Archer said. “Ping4alerts! has performed well through Hurricane Sandy, the Boston Marathon Manhunt, and other events, but we can’t depend on disasters to grow the install base and drive downloads. We poll our users regularly for product input and add those features requests to our roadmap.”
Ping4 Inc. is looking to add more public safety content to its map-driven interface such as historical crime data (break-ins, thefts, and assaults) and predictive crime data—where crime is most likely to happen.
