PissedConsumer.com Reveals Top Tax-Related Consumer Complaints for 2018
NEW YORK (PRWEB) March 12, 2018 -- U.S. consumer advocacy and customer complaints website, PissedConsumer.com researched tax-related consumer complaint trends filed by its users during the first two months of 2018. The company is offering tips for taxpayers looking to avoid these common problems.
"This time of year, taxes are on many consumers’ minds,” said Joanna Simpson of PissedConsumer.com. "And we’re seeing that with consumer complaint trends right now. About 2 percent of all reviews on Pissed Consumer for the past couple of months have been regarding taxes. And about 5 percent of all calls placed to companies through our site for the past 2 months have been tax-related.”
Tax-related consumer complaints being lodged so far in 2018 include problems with tax software and tax resolution services, but tax preparation services are bringing the most complaints. The types of problems reported most frequently include:
- problems with professional tax calculations;
- unexpected fees from tax preparers;
- fees paid for tax resolution when no resolution was achieved;
- denials and exorbitant fees for tax refund loans;
- software errors (such as incomplete filing while still charging the customer a filing fee).
For consumers who have yet to file their 2017 taxes, it’s not too late to avoid these commonly-reported issues. To improve their tax preparation experience, Pissed Consumer recommends the following:
- When hiring tax preparation services, ask trusted contacts for recommendations and research additional customer reviews to see if problematic trends are being reported.
- If using tax software, read consumer reviews as well as those in industry or technology publications to see if there are any known bugs that might cause filings to fail. Also check software specifications to make sure it can handle the necessary tax requirements, such as itemizing deductions or handling both business and personal taxes.
- If trying to resolve tax issues, remember promises that sound too good to be true often are. Before going with a service that promises to wipe out your tax debt for a fee, carefully research feedback from past customers. Also consider working with a qualified tax accountant or tax attorney instead.
- Don’t assume tax refund loans will be approved. Before paying for the service, ask for details regarding the approval process and requirements so you have an opportunity to choose another provider if necessary.
