Placemeter Launches Urban Intelligence Platform to Build Smarter Cities and Stronger Businesses
New York (PRWEB) June 23, 2015 -- Placemeter today launched its urban intelligence platform, which quantifies movement in modern cities at scale for retailers, civic groups, governments, and urban planners. The platform’s computer vision technology gathers data from live streams and video feeds to analyze pedestrian and vehicular movement, in real time, allowing customers to better understand the physical world and predict behavioral patterns. The platform has been in private beta and is now launching publicly, ready for immediate use anywhere, making urban intelligence affordable and scalable to anyone for the first time.
As the global population increases and the average city population is expected to double in the next 30 years, cities need a way to optimize the way they work. Placemeter believes making cities work better requires collaboration from local government to developers to civic groups. To optimize, you first need to quantify, so Placemeter’s self-serve platform allows anyone to use their proprietary computer vision technology to begin collecting data on pedestrian and vehicular movement right away, which can uncover patterns and guide new efficiencies.
“By applying this data layer to cities across the world, Placemeter is helping create a more efficient, people-centric, and accountable urban community,” said Alexandre Winter, Placemeter CEO and founder. “Through our private beta we realized that customers across a variety of industries and verticals have the highest need for the same data – quantified pedestrian and vehicular movement – so we’re pleased that our new platform provides this urban intelligence at scale.”
The platform’s simple, two-step on-boarding process helps users import archival video or streaming video feeds and select measurement points they want to track. Measurement points are where customers would like to quantify pedestrian and vehicular activity. The platform can measure the number of objects that pass through a given Measurement Point, such as people walking past a certain point on a sidewalk or going in and out of a building. Once set up, users can track and compare movement in multiple locations in real time, and automatically measure activity against a historical baseline. Raw data is also available to download for further analysis via CSV.
“Some of the most interesting ways our data can be used is in combination with an organization’s existing data; correlating multiple data sets unlocks unlimited opportunities for organizations large and small,” said Florent Peyre, COO and co-founder. “While cities and their governments use Placemeter to understand how people utilize public resources, and retail businesses large and small use Placemeter to understand foot traffic and guide site selection, it is an open platform that can be used by everyone to quantify movement, for various use cases and in various industries. It’s exciting to continually uncover new applications for this data.”
Features and benefits of the platform include:
• Speed – setup takes just minutes, then Placemeter’s algorithms begin analyzing video streams and delivering data to customers in real-time
• Affordability – customers choose the measurement points they want to track, and Placemeter charges a simple fee of $99/month per point with an annual commitment, or $149/month per point month-to-month
• Hardware agnostic – Customers can order the Placemeter Sensor, connect existing IP camera feeds into the system, or upload pre-recorded archive video
• Combination and Correlation – raw data is available for download for further analysis, to combine and correlate with other sources of data within an organization to reveal new insights
Also, as of today, Placemeter is taking pre-orders for its first proprietary sensor, which will offer a few key advantages over mobile phones and IP cameras for video capture. Setup with the sensor is incredibly easy; the form factor is elegant and discreet; and the sensor also furthers Placemeter’s commitment to Privacy by Design by processing all video locally; only the resulting data is shared to Placemeter’s servers. The Placemeter Sensor has an introductory price of $99, and will be available for shipment in fall 2015.
