Plastic Ingenuity Receives 2014 AmeriStar Award for Blue Tube UV Packaging Solution
Cross Plains, WI (PRWEB) May 15, 2014 -- The Institute of Packaging Professionals has awarded Plastic Ingenuity the 2014 AmeriStar Award for the plastic packaging company’s Blue Tube UV design for Fresh-Aire UV.
According to the Institute of Packaging Professionals website, the recipient of the AmeriStar Award must “have made outstanding contributions to the packaging community.”
PI designed the new, innovative thermoformed packaging solution for the Blue Tube UV germicidal light for an overall better user experience. The new design provides shock and crush protection, flexibility to hold multiple diameter products and easy loading, all while providing good visibility. This package can stand upright or hang on a peg hook for display for retail settings. The new design has an outer sleeve that displays information about the light directly on the sleeve. It also has end caps for security and tamper resistance.
As a recipient of the 2014 AmeriStar Award, PI is also eligible for the World Packaging Organization’s WorldStar Packaging Awards and has qualified as a finalist for the Best of Show, Sustainability, and Design Excellence Award categories.

We were focused on improving the packaging’s protection, and the award is an added bonus.”
This new packaging design gave Fresh-Aire UV many technical advantages. Because the package uses a single-formed part, manufacturers can snap an identical part to it, reducing the mold cost for production. The previous design required multiple parts, as well as additional stapling and taping. With a bellow feature, this packaging design creates better shock absorption for the light’s glass tube. The packaging also provides protection against biological and chemical agents.
Plastic Ingenuity’s new design also streamlined the packaging materials needed. By switching to the nested thermoformed trays, Fresh Aire UV was able to reduce warehouse space by 70 percent and a total of nine to ten pallets of materials for every 2,000 units produced. The new design also reduced freight shipping costs by 70 percent, making it an improved packaging solution.
The company will be recognized at the AmeriStar and Visionary Awards Reception during EastPack on June 10. The UBM Canon Trade Shows at EastPack in New York will also display the Blue Tube UV plastic packaging design.
