Plastic Surgeons’ Pro Bono Surgery Frees Young Orange County Woman from Daily Bullying
Newport Beach, CA (PRWEB) August 19, 2013 -- Twenty-seven year old Sarah Simmering has dealt with an enormous, disfiguring tumor on her nose since she graduated from college. The benign tumor, known as Rhinophyma, grew hideously large over time and caused years of daily ridicule and bullying. Renowned Newport Beach facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Kevin Sadati, heard about Sarah’s story from a colleague and was inspired to help change this young woman’s life.
Following Sarah’s college graduation, the tumor on her nose was controlled by medication; however, soon medications were no longer enough to suppress the growth of the mass on her face. She was not able to join the work force due to her condition, and a lack of money and medical insurance prevented Sarah from receiving effective medical treatment.
Sarah used to work as a swimming instructor-coach, which she had always loved. When her nasal mass began growing larger and more disfiguring, the children that she had always been close to were now afraid of her. Even parents were hesitant to have their kids enroll in her classes. Bullied by both children and adults, Sarah could no longer continue working at her job. The teaching she had always loved had now became daily torture for her.
Before Sarah’s surgery, she said, “Working with children, it’s been very difficult. It’s been hard to explain to them as well as their parents what’s going on with my face and my nose.”
Furthermore, the mass on Sarah’s nose was interfering with her health in many ways – from breathing problems and sleep apnea to excessive fatigue and weight gain. Along with the physical challenges she dealt with, this disfigurement also led to severe psychological problems such as social isolation, humiliation and depression. She had to endure the daily snickers, pointing and mental abuse by the people around her. This insensitivity only added to her deepening depression. She was extremely ashamed of herself and had lost almost all self-confidence.
Dr. Kevin Sadati, a board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Orange County, heard about Sarah's condition from Dr. Nicole Awada, a family physician at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Once Dr. Sadati met with Sarah, he instantly decided to help her in any way possible. He immediately knew that this surgery would require a team of skilled professionals. I wanted her to have this procedure to help her get on with her life and have a better quality of life.”
Sarah recently had her surgery and it was a huge success. Dr. Sadati and Dr. Mowlavi’s generous gift of her complimentary surgical not only restored her physical and psychological health, but also improved her quality of life. She now feels healthier and happier. She once again has a normal life without the constant ridicule and bullying for her appearance. Feeling and looking better after her surgery, she is now back to being a swim coach and doing the things she loved.
