On Tuesday, September 27 at 9:30 AM, representatives from MIT, AHS, GE Aviation, Lockheed Martin, Rolls-Royce and Air Force Research Laboratory will examine how in this age of higher fuel costs, lower profits margins, high competition, and environmental stewardship, the integration of propulsion and aircraft systems has increasingly blurred the lines between systems and added complexity. This panel seeks to expound upon the innovations that are under development in the classic component areas and the integrated systems development, and then further that discussion with a view of the future. Innovations in Intelligent Aircraft Systems
Kicking off day 2 of the conference at 8:30 AM is the keynote plenary panel discussion comprised of representatives from Pratt and Whitney, Boeing, NASA, UTAS, Airbus Americas, and Sikorsky. It is envisioned that the Connected Aircraft will follow the “internet of things” evolution, with resulting value added services to all parties in the value chain. Providing services to the operators, such as real-time analytics and diagnostics, improved scheduling of catering, fuel delivery and other ground services are just some examples of a true “Connected Aircraft”. Unlike the consumer sector, the aircraft industry poses some unique challenges, the longevity of the aircraft coupled with the complexity and cost of modification goes against the consumer sector’s approach for continuous and frequent changes. The additional IT complexity and infrastructure required will necessitate significant changes in facilities, personnel and operations. Operators of multiple fleet types, containing different aircraft equipment, face an added challenge of having consistent and uniform connected aircraft operations across their fleets. The goal of the panel is to explore the technologies in development and map out those that need to be developed, discuss potential solutions and foster dialogue among panel participants and attendees on new approaches and ideas. Innovations in Aircraft Systems Integration
To begin the final day of the conference at 8:30 AM, speakers from UTRC, Moog, NASA, Thales and drR2 will examine innovations in aircraft systems integration. It is envisioned that the More Electric Aircraft and Transformative Vertical Flight will result in higher performance, added capability, and more reliable platform. The initial demonstrations by NASA in the early 1990’s are being used in the latest commercial and military planes. The next generation of more integrated systems, such as integrated propulsion, power, and control, is well underway and yielding positive results. The challenges of integrating seemingly disparate functions are well documented, and present real obstacles to implementation, not to mention the cost of designing/testing/certifying entirely new systems.
