PMWC 2014 Silicon Valley Honors YW Kan with New “Pioneer” Award at Annual Conference
Mountain View, CA (PRWEB) November 24, 2013 -- The Personalized Medicine World Conference, PMWC 2014, to be held on January 27-28, 2014 in Silicon Valley, provides real-world insights into the progress of personalized medicine. Participants can join the discussion and interact with key opinion leaders who are framing and forming the future of this rapidly changing industry. PMWC 2014 is co-hosted by Stanford Hospital & Clinics and Oracle.
This year, PMWC has launched a new honor, called the “Pioneer Award,” to be given on occasion to a rare individual who presaged the present day excitement regarding personalized medicine and made major advances in the field, even at a time when less-evolved technology and less encouragement from peers existed.
For the inaugural award, the Conference’s program committee has chosen to honor Dr. Yuet Wai Kan, an innovator in disease detection. Dr. Kan has pioneered the design and implementation of prenatal DNA-based screening tests for sickle cell anemia, thalassemias, and various other single gene disorders. Additionally, he discovered DNA polymorphism, used extensively in gene discovery.
Dr. Kan’s research has highlighted the links between specific genetic aberrations and congenital diseases, while also expanding knowledge of hematology and cellular microenvironments. His findings have led to additional research on gene expression control mechanisms, as well as the establishment of genetic disease models. Dr. Kan is currently working to use stem cell approaches to treat blood and infectious diseases.
