Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 25, 2014 -- Portable lighting equipment rental has a buyer power score of 3.9 out of 5, indicating that buyers have more negotiation power than suppliers. Buyer power is strengthened by intense supplier competition, which is fostered by low market share concentration and low product specialization.
The portable lighting equipment rental market is very fragmented, which encourages supplier competition. The top three suppliers are United Rentals Inc. (URI), Sunbelt and Hertz, but the majority of suppliers are small companies with limited labor and financial resources. As such, it would be too financially debilitating for suppliers to attempt to capture market share outside of their local market. “Furthermore, the majority of suppliers do not have the financial muscle to expand market share through acquisition. Instead, suppliers must compete on price, which benefits buyers,” according to IBISWorld business research analyst Sean Windle. Additionally, low product specialization makes rental services similar across suppliers and makes it easy for buyers to pit suppliers against each other to obtain a better price.
Additionally, buyers can further improve their negotiation power by entering into long-term contracts. Suppliers are more apt to lower prices if they know they will receive revenue from a buyer for an extended period of time. Additionally, buyers can bundle related services to receive discounts on other industrial equipment rentals or industrial equipment training.
While overall buyer power in this market is strong, a low availability of substitutes weakens buyer leverage. “The only alternative to renting portable lighting equipment is to purchase it, but the cost of buying and owning portable lighting equipment prevents this option from being a viable substitute,” Windle says.
