Poverty Awareness Events to Aid Local Community and Children
Mooresville, NC (PRWEB) October 28, 2013 -- The Mooresville/Lake Norman Christian Mission has announced two major fundraisers for this fall. The 6th Annual Faces of Hope Benefit will be held November 16, 2013 from 6-10 p.m. at the Charles Mack Citizen Center and the 5K Turkey Trot will be held on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 28 beginning at 8:30 a.m.
The Faces of Hope Benefit is a Hollywood Glam-inspired fundraising event to celebrate the success and community support of the Mission. Featuring an elegant buffet dinner and fine wine, attendees will be treated to “Sinatra-inspired” entertainment and dancing, and witness the Getting Ahead graduation ceremony where graduates will share their inspiring stories of overcoming poverty. A silent-auction will also be held where attendees will be able to bid on items such as restaurant gift cards, art, sports activities and other merchandise.
Tickets for the Faces of Hope Benefit are $40 per person, or $300 for a table of 8. Tickets can be purchased by visiting comedancewithme.eventbrite.com. Donations to the silent auction can also be made by contacting Heather Halbedl at heatherhadlbedl(at)yahoo(dot)com.
The Turkey Trot is a fun, family event that raises awareness for poverty and hunger on a day typically renowned for feasting. A Kids Fun Run begins the event at 8:30 with the 5K beginning at 9 a.m. The 5K course is USATF certified and prizes will be awarded to the top 3 runners or each gender and the top runners by age categories. Registration is $25 if done on or before November 18. Register at http://www.sportoften.com. The race will begin at the Mission's parking lot - 266 N. Broad Street, Mooresville. Nearly 700 runners participated in 2012 and expectations are for 1000 runners in 2013.
These events raise funds to support the Mission – a 501C3 non-profit organization – which:
• Serves over 4000 families each year – 85% of which are headed by single mothers, and includes 4,471 children and over 1,200 elderly and disabled
• Distributes $3 million in services each year to the local community
• Distributes 45,000 pounds of food each month
Benefit Chairwoman Jeannine McConnell notes that, “Poverty is a big concern in our small community and the facts of poverty are astounding. We have the opportunity to address and correct this growing problem by raising awareness and helping fund relief efforts.”
• 40% of children in Mooresville are living in poverty or low-income families and qualify for free or reduced school meals
• 42% of children living in poverty never get out
• These children are at higher risk of child abuse, drug/alcohol abuse, learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral problems
