Powell Plumbing Educates Homeowners on How to Combat El Niño
Agua Dulce, CA (PRWEB) December 15, 2015 -- According to an October 9, 2015, Los Angeles Times article, El Niño is now “too big to fail,” and is among the strongest on record and is gaining strength in the Pacific Ocean. Additionally, climate scientists say California is likely to face an extremely wet winter.
“As for potential sewer issues, actual problems occur from the massive amounts of water in a short period of time,” said Cory Powell. “Additionally, problems can arise from burst pipes due to freezing. You can also get a back-up into the home if water inundates the sewer system from the street.”
If there are constant stoppages and back-ups into the home, or possibly foul smells, this means that you could have roots in the system or a broken old sewer line. Whatever the cause, Powell Plumbing suggests preventative maintenance such as hydro-jetting, which removes roots and debris from the system. They also have inline cameras to see if there is a rupture in the sewer pipe. For a septic system, homeowners can have the system pumped and do a camera inspection.
“To prevent further damage from burst pipes, we suggest taking the time to find your water shut-off valve and familiarize yourself with it so you can quickly turn your water off if a pipe breaks,” said Cory Powell. “As soon as the temperature is expected to dip below 20 degrees, let any high-risk faucets drip.”
In fact, any faucet that is fed by a pipe that has frozen in the past, or by a pipe that runs near an outside wall, is high-risk. If your sink has separate hot and cold faucets, let both of them drip. If there’s just one faucet, set it to medium so the hot and cold lines are both activated.
Once El Niño hits, if your pipes are in cabinets (e.g., under a sink), it’s a good idea to keep interior cupboard doors open during cold spells to let the warm air circulate around the pipes. This is especially important if the water pipes touch an exterior wall.
To ensure proper sewer maintenance, Cory Powell stresses utilizing the services of a reputable plumbing company, such as those provided by Powell Plumbing, which handles jobs both big and small. Powell Plumbing, which is featured on Angie’s List, also offers emergency services.
