Power Engineering Construction Co.’s $74 Million Ferry Terminal Expansion Underway
ALAMEDA, Calif. (PRWEB) November 09, 2017 -- Power Engineering Construction Company (PEC), a heavy civil and marine contractor specializing in complex construction on water and land, announced that the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) selected PEC to construct their new $74M downtown ferry terminal expansion. WETA awarded the project in two phases – Phase 1 includes the demolition of San Francisco’s Pier 2, dredging of the WETA downtown ferry terminal turning basin, and installation of 154 large diameter steel pilings. Phase 2 includes all remaining ferry terminal construction; Phase 2 is expected to begin in late November, 2017.
The downtown ferry terminal expansion is WETA’s largest project to date and is central to a region wide Ferry System buildout being undertaken by WETA.
The project’s location along San Francisco’s Embarcadero presents a number of logistical challenges including the requirement to maintain operations at WETA’s existing downtown ferry gates, avoid impacts to pedestrian and vehicle traffic along the San Francisco waterfront, and comply with an array of environmental regulatory requirements. When completed, the expanded downtown ferry terminal will have four gates able to accept up to 8 ferry boats. It will also have expanded queuing areas, and an expansive over-water promenade and plaza designed to serve as both a central meeting place and an emergency response facility in the event of a regional disaster. The entire project is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2019.
Balancing San Francisco’s Traffic and Marine Life
To eliminate any delays for tourists, pedestrians, joggers, cyclists, mass transit vehicles, and cars, PEC agreed with WETA to complete the project without public impact. This commitment includes maintaining current ferry service at a ferry gate located within the construction footprint – the ferry gate is one of WETA’s busiest with over 130 arrivals and departures each day. PEC has also sequenced construction around the need to protect marine wildlife. To accomplish this, all in-water construction will occur during a short six-month window in which vulnerable species are less likely to be affected. “We acknowledge the complexity and challenge of working on San Francisco Bay in the heart of downtown San Francisco ” said Michael Gougherty WETA Senior Planner. “At the same time, we’re very confident of PEC’s ability to deliver. They are skilled in complex over-water construction and have a great track record of building high-quality projects along the San Francisco Bay waterfront.”
According to David Mik, President of Power Engineering Construction, the company is prepared to meet the construction milestones and project constraints in the time frames required. “This expansion is integral to further developing and defining San Francisco’s public infrastructure for the future, and PEC is excited to a part of it” noted Mik.
Creating Waterfront Landmarks
PEC is a marine construction expert that has been building in, on, and near San Francisco Bay and along the Northern California coast since 1986. Notable recent projects the firm has completed include the Exploratorium Museum at Pier 15, involvement in the demolition of the eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, construction of WETA’s South San Francisco ferry terminal, and upgrades to Chevron’s Richmond Marine Terminal.
PEC has two additional projects of note underway on San Francisco Bay. One is a new operations and maintenance terminal being designed and built for WETA in Alameda, CA; this terminal will function as a staging and maintenance point for WETA’s fleet of ferry vessels (opening in the spring of 2018). The second project is the design and construction of a 16,000 SF floating fireboat station at San Francisco’s Pier 22.5 being built for the San Francisco Fire Department (opening in 2020); this project is being designed to cope with anticipated sea level rise over the next 75 years.
