Precautions for Driving Near 18-Wheeler Trucks
Memphis, Tennessee (PRWEB) September 24, 2015 -- The most recent report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows an estimated 342,000 accidents in 2013 involving large trucks. Tractor-trailers were responsible for 3,964 deaths and approximately 95,000 injuries in the U.S. As students return to school and parents negotiate new driving routes and schedules, hazardous driving circumstances are clearly something to keep in mind. Matthew Porter, Memphis personal injury lawyer, has a few tips for avoiding a collision with a tractor-trailer on congested roadways this fall.
Do keep a safe distance between your vehicle and a tractor-trailer truck at all times. The size and weight of a tractor-trailer may affect the driver’s ability to slow down or stop, which can quickly result in a trucking accident that may also result in personal injury to you and/or your passengers.
Don’t assume you are visible to the driver of a tractor-trailer truck. While changing lanes near a truck or passing a truck, do so with extreme caution. This can help mitigate the circumstances and perhaps prevent you from becoming involved in an auto accident.
Do pay attention when a tractor-trailer is changing lanes or is making use of turn signals. Trucks have limited visibility of the vehicles behind and next to them.
If an accident does occur:
Don’t admit fault or assume liability at the scene of a tractor-trailer accident. Accountability in vehicle accidents involving commercial trucks may extend beyond the driver to other parties.
Do contact 911 if you have been in an accident with a tractor-trailer.
