Pregnant Teen Faces Life-Altering Decision in New Book by Laurie Hooker-Davison
Toledo, IL (PRWEB) September 26, 2013 -- When 15-year-old Sydney tells her best friend she’s pregnant, it hits close to home for Emily, whose sister became pregnant five years before at age 17, much to the chagrin of her parents. A clinic confirms the pregnancy, which happened despite birth control, but Sydney refuses to consider an abortion, even if it might make her life easier. Although Sydney is sure her boyfriend, Mark, will do the right thing, he’s nowhere to be found and won’t return calls. As the story in “Sydney” gradually evolves, Emily seems to be more upset about her judgmental mother’s reaction to Sydney’s pregnancy than with supporting Sydney in her time of need.
Meanwhile, life in high school continues with another close friend falling in and out of love, teachers handing out detention and Sydney just trying to make it through the day. The girls learn that teenage pregnancy hits Emily’s mother closer to home than they realized. Eventually, Sydney must make a decision about her future, but will she make the right one? Although fictional, the novel presents real-life teenage situations such as abuse, sexuality, abstinence and bullying written in emotion-laden language appropriate for teens and the adults who care for them.
Author Laurie Hooker-Davison teaches at-risk youth for an alternative education program in Illinois. Armed with a bachelor’s degree in English from Eastern Illinois University, she began teaching hoping to affect students by introducing them to great writers. The reality included teaching sexual education, abstinence classes and English. She put aside dreams of becoming a songwriter so she’d be able to support her children.
