Since 2007, the annual Otis Report on the Creative Economy (Otis Report) has measured and assessed trends of creative fields. The report, commissioned by Otis College of Art and Design and generated by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation, describes the economic impact of Los Angeles’ creative industries and examines its role in the overall state business sector. The Otis Report has become a powerful tool for arts advocacy regionally and nationally. The 2013 report revealed that the arts contributed $80 billion to the region’s total gross product and comprised 1 in 7 jobs.

The 2014 Otis Report will be available for download online at http://www.otis.edu/otis-report-creative-economy on Wed., March 11, 2015. The release of the report coincides with the advanced screening of the television special at the Premiere House at Regal L.A. LIVE Stadium 14 in downtown L.A. Additional event details can be found at http://www.otis.edu/otisreport.

Beginning March 2, 2015, KCETLink’s ARTBOUND, (http://www.kcet.org/arts/artbound/), will publish a series of multimedia installments that provide a comprehensive exploration of select creative contributors and their respective impact to the region, including the fashion industry, digital media, arts education, and the role of creative placemaking in the economic health and growth of our communities. The online vignettes will culminate in a one-hour television special that premieres in Southern California on March 24 at 8 p.m. PT on KCET and nationally on March 30 at 8 p.m. PT/ET on Link TV (DirecTV 375 and DISH Network 9410). An encore presentation will air on March 29 at 6 p.m. PT on KCET and April 1 at 1 p.m. PT/ 4 p.m. ET on Link TV.

“Through this series, we want to help our viewers understand the undeniable importance of our creative industries in shaping not only the culture of our region but its role as a powerful economic driver in the state and the nation,” said Juan Devis, Senior Vice President, Content Development and Production, KCETLink. “We are excited to be able to profile some of the creative leaders and experts who are behind the innovation and ingenuity tied to these expansive and distinctive industries and shed light on the importance of access to arts education as integral to the growth and health of our region.”

“This thought-provoking series will tell the stories inside the creative economy, presenting a behind-the-scenes look at the professionals and innovators who drive cultural enrichment and economic growth,” said Dr. Kerry Walk, Interim President at Otis College of Art and Design. “Since its inception, nearly a decade ago, the Otis Report on the Creative Economy has put real numbers to creativity, firmly establishing the economic impact of the arts, design, and entertainment. Otis is thrilled to be working with KCETLink and ARTBOUND to bring the report findings to life with an engaging multimedia exploration of California’s creative engine.”

ARTBOUND will explore several key areas of the creative economy with multimedia posts that culminate into a one-hour broadcast special, including:

MARCH 2: WHAT IS THE CREATIVE ECONOMY? The creative economy encompasses everything from overtly artistic endeavors to the halo of diverse industries that use creativity as the engine powering innovation. This series-opening article reveals how creative industries are indelibly interwoven into the fabric of Southern California's economic landscape.

MARCH 6: CREATIVE PLACEMAKING, exploring how creative businesses are investing in community-building, forging neighborhood identity, and driving economic activity. The segment will focus on the Los Angeles neighborhood of Boyle Heights and local institutions that share a commitment to preserving the historic legacy and cultural vitality of the community.

MARCH 9: CREATIVE MANUFACTURING, peering inside the network of industries involved in manufacturing a product. The video segment will follow the construction of one item: a pair of jeans produced by a boutique denim company. Ranging from design offices in Venice to fabric production plants and assembly factories in Downtown L.A., to photo shoots in the Mojave Desert; the segment will follow the creative process from sketch to thread to the storefront window.

MARCH 13: TALENT PIPELINE & ARTS EDUCATION, unveiling the underlying educational network where important skills needed for a thriving, productive creative economy are developed. This installment will also address access -- a major issue in arts education.

MARCH 16: ART ECOSYSTEM, focusing on the fine arts economy. The segment will profile the work of artists, moving from the micro-level of studio production to the experience of getting work recognized and collected. The segment will provide a unique look at the triangulation between artist, gallerist, and curator as works travel from the gallery to the museum space, a cathedral of art and major economic driver.

MARCH 20: DESIGN INNOVATION, displaying how creativity is a key asset to the innovative work of industries including tech and aerospace companies. This installment will examine the work of visual strategists who apply creatively compelling approaches to complex and important data.
