Preventing Transmission of Zika in Latin America and the Caribbean
Bethesda, MD (PRWEB) September 26, 2016 -- With emerging evidence on the severe health impact of the mosquito-borne Zika virus, the Abt-led President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) Africa Indoor Residual Spraying (AIRS) Project has been selected to expand its scope beyond Africa to support USAID Missions and Bureaus in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Abt-led initiative, known as Zika AIRS Project (ZAP), is funded by USAID and will enhance USAID’s ability to implement vector control and entomological monitoring programs in the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti and Honduras. Abt will plan, implement, monitor and evaluate vector control activities intended to prevent Zika transmission... ZAP may also provide technical assistance to other Latin American and Caribbean countries.
“We are excited about the expansion of Abt’s malaria vector control to include the control of other vector-borne diseases work beyond the ongoing implementation of indoor residual spraying and malaria entomological monitoring in the 17 countries in which we work in Africa,” says Brad Lucas, Vice President at Abt and Project Director of the PMI AIRS Project. “In Latin America and the Caribbean, we will build local governments’ capacity to plan and implement vector control activities and conduct entomological monitoring to reduce the spread of the Zika virus.”
