Primoris Academy’s Students Contribute to Historic Toy Drive
Westwood, NJ (PRWEB) December 20, 2013 -- They’re young, but very smart (and generous). The students at Primoris Academy (an independent private school for advanced learners) donated more than 50 toys to the Westwood, New Jersey police department as part of the annual Bergen County P.B.A. toy drive. The toys were not donated by the students’ parents. Rather, the precocious students at Primoris Academy raised money through their own efforts and with their net proceeds they purchased toys from local merchants so that they could donate them to this worthy cause.
This year’s Bergen County P.B.A. toy drive was the largest ever with 34 Bergen County police departments participating and collecting over 10,000 toys. The beneficiaries of the toy drive are local children through the Hackensack Medical Center, Englewood Medical Center, New Hope, Shelter our Sisters, Tomorrow’s Children, and the Wounded Warrior Project.
To make their toy donations, the students at Primoris Academy, located in Westwood, New Jersey, first raised money by selling holiday-themed table centerpieces which they made themselves. The children were assisted in their designs by Westwood resident and floral designer Liz Edelman. These professional looking arrangements were sold by the students for $25 a piece (parents were instructed not to purchase them for their families). After the students calculated their net profit by subtracting their project costs from their total revenue, they netted $621 or $18.78 per centerpiece. The proceeds then were used to purchase over 50 toys, blankets, pajamas and more from local Westwood merchants for boys and girls ages 18 months to age 18. Ultimately, the children were able to hand over the toys to three members of the Westwood police department including Officer Niko Pieratos, Officer Anthony Piccinich, and Officer John Hurtuk.
Addressing the Primoris Academy students, Officer Pieratos told them, "Primoris students should be very proud of themselves for all their hard work. We've never had a group approach us and ask if they could do something as unique a project as this. We are so incredibly appreciative and proud of all of you." After each officer spoke to the students, the students had a lively Q&A session with the three officers before they left with the toys.
The students at Primoris Academy learned a lot more than how to calculate net profit or how to raise funds through the sale of goods and services. They learned the invaluable lesson that it is important to give of oneself to help others who are less fortunate and in need. This is a life lesson the students can be proud of throughout this holiday season.
