(PRWEB UK) 31 July 2013 -- According to the recent BBC News report dated 31 July 2013: Private detectives to need licence, operating as an unlicensed private detective will be illegal from autumn 2014. Home Office plans are to license all investigators through the Security Industry Authority after completing a training course and passing a criminality check. Home Secretary Theresa May said: "It is vital we have proper regulation of private investigators to ensure rigorous standards in this sector and the respect of individuals' rights to privacy.”
The BBC News report goes on to say that anyone with a criminal record for data protection offences will not be granted a licence. These offences include unlawful interception of data, accessing data on computers without owner’s permission, bribery and blagging information from call centres. Under the new law all contractors will need to be licensed and the penalty for operating without a valid licence could be a custodial sentence of six months.
This long awaited move by the government to licence the private detective industry has been well received by Private Investigators London. The regulation of the industry is good news for the many legitimate private detective companies in the UK. Weeding out the rouge investigators that plague the industry is a positive and welcome step promoting trust and credibility in an industry that has received unpopular press coverage in recent years. Regulation is important as it keeps people safe from rouge investigators, gives rules and guidelines that investigators can follow to operate within the law and gives the industry credibility.
Spokesperson from Private Investigators London, Jamie Rower said:
“The industry has been crying out for licensing and we at Private Investigators London are delighted by the news, in fact, we are already studying for the exam in the autumn.”
