Prominent Beverly Hills Urologist Comments on New Data Regarding the Potential Risks and Side Effects of ADT Treatment for Advanced Prostate Cancer
Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) January 27, 2015 -- In a review article published in the January 15, 2015 edition of the journal Oncology, the author outlined a series of potential risks and side effects recently associated with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. Because the male hormone testosterone can stimulate tumor growth in patients with prostate cancer, surgery and prescription drugs to reduce production of the hormone have become a staple of treatment for advanced prostate cancer.
In addition to some of the established potential side effects associated with the use of ADT, including erectile dysfunction, decreased bone density, hot flashes and erectile dysfunction, the new data suggests that the treatment could potentially lead to an increased risk of diabetes, pneumonia, cardiovascular problems, and acute kidney injury.
“At Comprehensive Urology, one size does not fit all when it comes to treatment. We custom tailor each patient’s prostate cancer prescription and take a range of factors into consideration when determining the use and duration of hormone treatments,” said Dr. Kia Michel, prominent prostate cancer surgeon in Beverly Hills and co-founder of Comprehensive Urology.
As a relatively new study, more research will be necessary to reach conclusive results. Because conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes can be fairly prevalent in the general population, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network has issued guidelines that recommend potential pre-screenings for cardiovascular disease, which like prostate cancer can increase a patient’s risk factor with age.
“We design individual treatment plans based on the stage, grade, and volume of the patient’s cancer, as well as factors like age and any associated health issues and co-morbidities,” added Dr. Michel.
Dr. Michel graduated from Whitman College where he was a Presidential Scholar for four years before attending the University of Washington School of Medicine, where he graduated with Honors and was recognized by the National Medical Honor Society (AOA). Dr. Michel then completed a prestigious six-year residency program in Urologic Surgery at UCLA, where he was recognized as a Pfizer scholar in Urology. After residency, Dr. Michel completed a fellowship in Urological Oncology and advanced surgical techniques also at UCLA. During his fellowship, Dr. Michel’s efforts were recognized by the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute and the American Foundation for Urologic Disease.
