Prominent Financial Expert Julie Stav Joins Master Your Card Latino Coalition Advisory Board
WASHINGTON, D.C. (PRWEB) April 14, 2015 -- Master Your Card: Oportunidad, a community empowerment program sponsored by MasterCard®, today announced that Julie Stav, a financial expert and educator, joined the coalition’s advisory board. Stav will work with the coalition to help Latino consumers and small business owners achieve greater access, security, control and prosperity using electronic payment technology.
“I am eager to work with Master Your Card: Oportunidad to provide Latino consumers and small business owners with the tools and tailored advice they need to make informed decisions, to take charge of their financial futures and to better understand how they can effectively use electronic payment technology to advance,” said Stav. “Too many Latinos rely on expensive alternative financial services like check cashers and payday lenders, unnecessarily forfeiting too much of their hard-earned wages."
Over the years, Stav has empowered individuals with practical financial advice through a variety of platforms, including several New York Times bestselling books; her personal finance radio show, “Tu Dinero con Julie Stav;” and as Univision Television’s on-air financial expert. Stav also founded Tu Dinero, the first and only Spanish-language personal finance magazine for U.S. Hispanics. Through these platforms, Stav empowers financially underserved communities by providing them with the knowledge and tools they need to make the best financial decisions involving personal banking, credit, retirement, investing, making major life purchases and running a small business.
Stav has received several awards for her work, including the National Council on Economic Education’s Visionary Award and the Latino Leaders Network’s Eagle Leadership Award. She was also featured in HBO’s The Latino List, which showcased prominent Latino role models, and two sitting U.S. presidents have recognized her work.
The Master Your Card: Oportunidad Advisory Board, which was created three years ago, consists of current and former Latino political, business and civic leaders from across the United States. Together, the coalition provides community empowerment opportunities for Latinos that show how the wise selection and use of electronic payment technology can help build financial strength through increased convenience, transparency, affordability and control.
Other members of the Master Your Card: Oportunidad Advisory Board include:
• Hon. Fabián Nuñez, former speaker of the California Assembly and Master Your Card: Oportunidad national chair
• Alfonso Aguilar, executive director, Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles
• Hon. Hector Barreto, chairman, The Latino Coalition
• Sonia Lopez, president and CEO, CNC (formerly known as the Cuban American National Council)
• Hon. Manny Diaz, former mayor of Miami and former president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors

• Hon. Lucy Flores, former Nevada assemblywoman representing the 28th district
• Harold Oliver, president and CEO, TX Capitol Consulting Group, LLC
• Hon. J. Walter Tejada, vice chairman, Arlington, Va., County Board
According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s "2013 National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households," 17.9 percent of Latino households are unbanked and 28.5 percent are underbanked, meaning they have little or no access to mainstream financial services. In contrast, 3.6 percent of white households are unbanked, while 15.9 percent are underbanked.
