Providence Car Accident Attorney Deborah G. Kohl Comments on Report about Increasing DUI Arrests in Rhode Island
Providence, RI (PRWEB) February 21, 2014 -- Commenting on a news report about an increase in DUI in Rhode Island in 2013, Providence drunk driving accident attorney Deborah G. Kohl of the Law Offices of Deborah G. Kohl today praised law enforcement efforts and noted she has handled many serious cases in her office involving drunk driving.
Kohl commented on a report in Rhode Island Public Radio (“RI State Police: DUI Arrests Up In 2013,” December 30, 2013). According to RIPR, Rhode Island State Police said more than 500 DUI arrests were made in 2013, marking an increase of close to 100 arrests from the year before.
Kohl said it’s important to send a strong message to drivers that drinking and driving will not be tolerated.
“We have seen the devastating impact of drunk driving accidents first-hand,” Kohl said. “We know that drunk driving accidents affect Rhode Island families in many ways, emotionally, physically and financially. That’s why we support these ‘zero-tolerance’ policies. But while these efforts do make our roads safer, it’s ultimately up to the individual driver to make the responsible decision never to drink and drive.”
According to RIPR, the Rhode Island State Police reported more than 500 alcohol-related arrests in 2013, representing an increase of 80 arrests from 2012. However, officials from the Rhode Island State Police told RIPR that this estimate doesn’t take into account the last week of 2013, which typically is the busiest time of year for law enforcement officials.
According to RIPR, state law enforcement officials are enforcing a “zero tolerance” policy for drunk drivers. This means drivers who are arrested will spend a night in jail, face fines ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars, and in some cases lose their license for up to five years, according to the report.
“Drunk drivers who cause serious accidents must be held accountable,” Kohl said. “At the Law Offices of Deborah G. Kohl, we are highly skilled at protecting the rights of victims injured in such accidents and families who have lost loved ones. If you are injured or lose a loved one in a drunk driving accident, you should seek the advice of legal counsel. An attorney can help pursue compensation for your losses and send a message that careless or reckless behavior will not be tolerated.”
