In a June 6 report by the Insurance Journal (“New Position to Target Workers’ Comp Fraud in Rhode Island”) it was announced that a new position would be created by the Department of Labor and Training to prosecute fraud in the state’s unemployment and workers compensation program.
According to the article, the Department of Labor and Training recovered $5.5 in overpayments to beneficiaries last year alone. The new position will be tasked with rooting out cases in which individuals wrongfully receive workers compensation or unemployment benefits.
“By targeting the misuse of public benefits the state is sending a message that fraud won’t be tolerated,” said Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee in the article.
“When public benefits such as workers compensation insurance and unemployment are misused, it isn’t only the state that suffers. Money is taken out of the hands of the people who need it the most – honest, hard-working individuals who were hurt at work and deserve compensation for their injuries,” said Kohl, a workers compensation lawyer in Providence. “Workers compensation fraud in Rhode Island cannot be taken lightly.
