Quadrant EPP’s Shape Data Approach™ for Thermoplastic Material Specification: An Industry Rethinks Its Approach

The Shape Data Approach™ is a new methodology developed by Quadrant EPP that focuses on clarifying and improving the accuracy of thermoplastics data for more successful specification writing. In oil and gas industries, where part failure can be particularly disastrous (leaks leading to environmental damage; lost revenue due to downtime; and even death), specifying the right material is critical.
Most resin manufacturers only use one process to generate test sample data—typically injection molding. However, Quadrant EPP’s independent testing has proven that materials made with different processes (extrusion or compression molding, for example) result in different data points. This variation in data can result in increases or decreases in safety, performance, and value.
“When suppliers don’t have their own quality control testing labs, they many times pass along resin data in place of shape data,” says Jim Hebel, Quadrant EPP’s Manager of Technical Service & Application Development. “But customers are buying processed shapes—not virgin resin. It’s not only logical, but scientifically more accurate to use shape data, since the quality of that data will dictate the expected performance in thermoplastics applications.”
