"The Gentle Gamblers", Lillian Ross
"The Gentle Gamblers", Lillian Ross

(PRWEB) October 30, 2014 -- Nearly 100 years ago, the MacIntosh Family left Prince Edward Island to seek a future on the Canadian prairie in Alberta. Their dynamic story is told through their real-life memoirs, along with the addition of some creative fiction. "The Gentle Gamblers" tells an amazing tale of survival and bravery.

These books show a way of life that disappeared from the North American psyche long ago. The historical tales offer fascinating reading and we are thrilled to announce the books’ releases. - Robert Fletcher, CEO of SBPRA

This typical family was part of the Canadian dreamers and visionaries who braved the dangers of traveling west to carve out a new life for themselves. Taking few possessions with them, they gambled their very lives to fulfill their dreams, fighting through blizzards, drought, and influenza in the 1920s.

The May 3rd blizzard in fact continued for three days, burying the prairies under three feet of snow. These real people faced catastrophic events with uncommon bravery.

About the Author: Lillian (MacIntosh) Ross was the 14th of 15 children born to Donald and Sadie MacIntosh. She earned her bachelor’s in education at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Literature courses taken there inspired her to become an author. However, it was not until she retired from teaching, married Reg Ross from the oilfields, and raised two sons, Lonnie and Erin, that she finally made her trilogy of historical novels of pioneer adventure a reality. What started to be one book of family memoirs became a trilogy of historical novels about the MacIntosh Family, who travelled west to the Canadian prairies. The urge to restore important moments lost to time took over. She wanted to tell their real stories with actual names of people and places, and yet write a novel that readers could be part of, so her books are creative nonfiction. She has two sons and is a widow.

"THE GENTLE GAMBLERS" (e-Book ISBN: 978-1-62212-874-7, Kindle ISBN: 978-1-62212-875-4) is available for $9.99 at: http://epubco.com/shop/products/the-gentle-gamblers/, or for Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, and in multi-formats for other e-Readers through numerous vendors online.

Life was not easy for the 15 children born to Donald and Sadie MacIntosh. Their life is enfolded into an account of living on the great northern plains of Canada in "The Tender Years: A Canadian Historical Novel of Pioneer Adventure" – Second Edition (Revised): Volume Two of a Trilogy. This is a story about real people living through real events in Canadian history, while carving out a life for themselves with uncommon bravery.

Donald and Sadie emigrated west from Prince Edward Island in Eastern Canada and spent nearly four years on the Alberta prairies, where they gambled everything on raising wheat. Between dust storms, hail, prairie fires, blizzards, and a difficult landlady, the family was finally beaten into submission. Loading their few possessions, they moved north in a railroad boxcar to the bushland to face new challenges. Meanwhile the family is growing. By the time they reach the northern bush country, they have eight children.

This extraordinary story of courage comes from the memoirs of these children as they grew up. The people they met and the conditions they endured made living in the North memorable, heartbreaking, and sometimes frightening, but there are also tender and humorous moments. This is the second book in a trilogy following The Gentle Gamblers.

“Your readers share the family’s sorrows, its laughter and tears. It serves as a reminder of how much we owe these brave pioneers. An excellent well-written narrative.” – Eric Brown, Magnolia Press

"THE TENDER YEARS: A CANADIAN HISTORICAL NOVEL OF PIONEER ADVENTURE" – SECOND EDITION (REVISED): VOLUME TWO OF A TRILOGY (Kindle ISBN: 978-1-62857-088-5, ePub ISBN: 978-1-62857-087-8) is available for $9.99 at http://epubco.com/shop/products/the-tender-years-a-canadian-historical-novel-by-lillian-ross/, or for Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, and in multi-formats for other e-Readers through numerous vendors online.

"A Full House" is a historical novel about farm life in Alberta, Canada, in the 1930s, ‘40s, and ’50s.

Based on true accounts, the book is the final in a trilogy, following The Gentle Gamblers and The Tender Years. In her latest novel, Lillian (MacIntosh) Ross writes about her heritage, as the MacIntosh Family moves into their homestead in the northern bushland after living in a series of rented houses. It is here that the pioneer family rides out the Depression, as one by one their children grow up.

Share in their struggles, joys, and triumphs as they survive during this difficult period of history. This story, the people, the incidents that happened, and the places are true, and are taken from the memoirs of the people who lived them. That is why the author calls it “creative non-fiction,” even though it is written as fiction.

"A FULL HOUSE: A CANADIAN HISTORICAL NOVEL OF PIONEER ADVENTURE" (Kindle ISBN: 978-1-63135-447-2, ePub ISBN: 978-1-63135-446-5) is available for $9.99 at http://epubco.com/shop/products/a-full-house-a-canadian-historical-novel-of-pioneer-adventure-by-lillian-ross/, or for Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, and in multi-formats for other e-Readers through numerous vendors online.

Historical fiction writer Lillian Ross based this action-packed novel on a true story. This second edition includes the real names of people and places that were gleaned from newspaper archives and other research.

The real story of Frank “Cougar” Wright in "Cougar’s Crossing" tells of a loud, brash, and irreverent pioneer in the Canadian Northwest who came from Wisconsin and the forests of Washington. Cougar swore like a trooper, and didn’t believe in a higher power than his own strength. He loved his family and wanted them to join him in his struggle to tame the Canadian wilderness. His story is filled with romance, adventure, and even a ghost!

“To read a book by Lillian Ross is to travel to another time and place with characters who quickly become family. Read this true-to-life novel to feel the essence of the rugged area on the Canadian prairies.” – Corrine McConchie, Vancouver librarian

“Could this be ‘his’ remains, we wondered? The hated man who killed our Aunt Florence in 1921? … The facts were overwhelming – more fascinating than we ever imagined. Now the story of Cougar’s Crossing would have to be changed. We knew the truth – or most of it.”

Notes the author, “This book is dedicated to all of the pioneers who lived the stories that I tell.”
