Queens Divorce and Family Law Attorney Bruce Feinstein, Esq. Releases Top Ways to Improve Marriage in 2016
Queens, NY (PRWEB) December 31, 2015 -- With the advent of the New Year come new opportunities to improve everything from finances to marriage. In celebration of the New Year and nearly two decades of private practice, divorce and family law attorney Bruce Feinstein, Esq. released a review of ways to improve marriage in 2016. “Over the years I have seen how a marriage can break down, but in these tough experiences lie ways to help maintain a healthy marriage; I want to share those with clients and couples in celebration of a new year,” says Mr. Feinstein.
One way to maintain a healthy marriage is sharing information about finances. Many couples have one spouse who handles the bulk of financial dealings, whether that be paying bills or being the primary financial caregiver. While this relationship is normal, it is unhealthy not to share financial information with a spouse. Being open about the status of retirement accounts, bill payments, and salaries can foster trust and allow a spouse to take over financial dealings if the other spouse is unable to do so.
A second healthy marriage incentive is planning free time together. This includes time free of technology, children, and other distractions that can get in the way of fostering a strong relationship. “It sounds odd to schedule time together, but planning excursions and making time for one another on a regular basis, no matter how short, will help spouses be more attentive to each other’s needs and show their commitment,” explains Mr. Feinstein.
Coming to terms with inevitable conflict is another tenant Mr. Feinstein espouses. Coming to terms with the fact that arguments will arise over time is a healthy way to view the bonds of marriage. “If arguments become physically violent or devolve into emotional abuse, then it is time to seek help,” says Mr. Feinstein. “But the day-to-day arguments between spouses are both normal and healthy. They are the result of communication and the realization that real marriage is not like the perfect images shown on social media and entertainment.”
A seemingly inconsistent path to a stronger marriage is having independence. Cultivating individual hobbies, friendships, and passions help one spouse appreciate the other. They also allow room for personal growth outside the marriage. “I have also seen clients who end the divorce process with too few friends and no pastimes to fill their newfound free time. It can be detrimental no matter what stage you are at in life,” says Mr. Feinstein.
A final way to improve marriage in the coming year is maintaining an active sex life. Physical intimacy, both sexual and non-sexual, leads to health benefits and a sense of connection with a partner. A peer-reviewed July 21, 2014 article in HealthLine states that “coupled partners have increased relationship satisfaction when they fulfill one another's sexual desires,” along with other benefits.
