QWERTY Keyboard Layout Explored In Latest Ultimate Typing Blog Post, eReflect Announces
New York City, NY (PRWEB) April 21, 2015 -- Everyone uses their QWERTY keyboard to read, study, learn, and play. eReflect now provides its readers with a lesser-known fact about the popular QWERTY keyboard and how it came into being some centuries ago. According to the touch typing blog post by eReflect, the QWERTY keyboard was an idea born out of the need to prevent bar jamming in the first typewriters. Contrary to popular belief, the QWERTY keyboard layout was not meant to impede or slow down typing, but to ensure less bar jamming interrupting the typist. eReflect’s editor explains what Christopher Sholes did to avoid jamming of the key bars, saying, “with Sholes’ layout, bar jamming was reduced and typing become faster and more efficient.” The QWERTY layout’s primary aim was to facilitate faster typing by ensuring letters that commonly appear together in typed words were, on the keyboard, as far as possible from one another, thus successfully preventing jamming.
To solve the crowded underlying mechanism of early typewriters, the QWERTY layout seemed like the perfect answer. Sholes gave birth to the most widely used keyboard layout, one that has been adopted in the making of computers and later tablets, smartphones, and any other keyboard-based device.
The QWERTY keyboard’s popularity is evident in the integration of typing courses in primary and middle school. Keyboarding is now considered to be a core 21st century technological skill every young person has to master. Testimony to this keyboard layout’s popularity is the existence of several typing skills programs like Ultimate Typing™ that help people learn how to touch type with accuracy and speed. To improve typing speed and technique means that people become more efficient users of keyboard-based technology, whether it is for work, study, or play.
Several attempts to create more time-efficient keyboard layouts have been made over the years. The most successful of these are the Dvorak layout and, to a lesser extent, the Colemak and Maltron keyboard layouts.
