Campbell, California (PRWEB) July 22, 2014 -- The Radiosurgery® Society (RSS) announced today that Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital located in Perth, Australia and the European CyberKnife Center of Munich, Germany have joined the RSSearch™ Patient Registry, a patient registry dedicated to determining the utilization and outcomes of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for the treatment of non-cancerous and cancerous lesions.
The RSS is also proud to announce that RSSearch currently includes data from over 14,000 patients with benign and malignant lesions, including brain and spinal tumors and cancers of the lung, prostate, pancreas and liver, all treated with SRS and SBRT, making it one of the largest international databases of its kind.
“The RSSearch Registry is a very important tool for the prospective collection of patient data. In times where it is increasingly difficult to execute prospective randomized trials, multi-center data collection and consecutive outcomes analysis are becoming the backbone of scientific publications,” stated Dr. Alexander Muacevic, M.D., Professor University of Munich and Director of European CyberKnife Center, Munich, Germany.
“RSSearch will provide exciting new opportunities to examine patterns of care and clinical results of SRS/SBRT therapy at our hospital and at other centers around the world,” commented Professor Sean Bydder, FRANZCR and Dr. Colin Tang, FRANZCR, Radiation Oncology, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Australia. “RSSearch is a significant contribution to the international data collection efforts for SRS/SBRT outcomes for both clinicians and patients.”
The Radiosurgery® Society is utilizing the registry to collect information on treatment management practices of SRS/SBRT, to report on clinical outcomes including treatment effectiveness and quality of care for patients and to contribute to the creation of patient care guidelines. RSSearch is a comprehensive database designed to capture screening, treatment and follow-up data from all SRS/SBRT-treated lesions throughout the body. Patients from thirty-nine medical centers in the United States participate in RSSearch. “Patient registries are becoming an increasingly important component of collecting real-world evidence to understand the effectiveness of treatments and patient outcomes. RSSearch is a platform that will enable physicians world-wide to collaborate to advance the field of SRS and SBRT,” stated Dr. Deepak Khuntia, M.D., Vice President of Medical Affairs, Varian Medical Systems.
“Congratulations to the RSSearch Registry for reaching these milestones. Patient registries can amass volumes of real-world data from diverse populations to demonstrate the effectiveness of treatment approaches, and help inform emerging best practices in the clinical setting. RSSearch has recently begun drawing from the registry to produce reports that will be broadly useful to the radiosurgery community. Continued good luck in that important process,” commented Professor Eric F. Lartigau, M.D., Acting Chief Medical Officer, Accuray, Inc.
