Rahsaan Harris Named President and CEO of Emma L. Bowen Foundation
New York, NY (PRWEB) January 16, 2015 -- The Emma L. Bowen Foundation, the nation’s leader in creating career opportunities for people of color within the media industry today appointed Dr. Rahsaan Harris as President and CEO.
Dr. Harris replaces long-time CEO Phylis Eagle-Oldson, who recently retired after twenty years with the organization.
The Emma Bowen Foundation, together with its 41 corporate sponsors from leading media outlets around the world, develop and manage programs that focus on scholastic achievement, direct work experience and professional development for students of color students. Approximately 700 students have completed the Emma Bowen’s programs and many have pursued careers in the media industry.
Dr. Harris, who has more than 15 years of direct experience working in philanthropy and nonprofits, joins from his role as executive director of Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy (EPIP). EPIP is a national network of foundation professionals and social entrepreneurs designed to develop emerging leaders committed to building a just, equitable and sustainable society.

Ms. Eagle-Oldson leaves an impressive legacy at the Emma Bowen Foundation. Over the last 15 years alone, the Foundation’s graduate population grew from 80 in 1999 to more than 700 alumni with the Class of 2015. Additionally, sponsoring companies grew from 17 in 1999 to more than 40 in 2014.
“As with Emma Bowen and Phylis Eagle-Oldson before me, I look forward to continuing to work with our sponsors, our students and our staff to advance the Foundation’s mission and ability to provide and prepare youth of color for careers and advancement opportunities in the media industry”, said Dr. Harris.
Dr. Harris, 41, holds degrees from Princeton University, Columbia University, New York University as well as a PHD from The New School University. He resides in New York City.

Established in 1989, the Emma L. Bowen Foundation is dedicated to creating career opportunities in the media industry for youth of color through programs that focus on scholastic achievement, direct work experience and professional development. Together with its 41 corporate sponsors, the Foundation currently supports approximately 250 students each year through a multi-year internship program for students of color working at media companies across the country. Approximately 700 students have completed the program and many have pursued careers in the industry after graduation.
Through the program, partner companies sponsor students to work every summer until college graduation providing both hourly wages and matching scholarships for college expenses. Qualified African American, Latino, Native American, or Asian American/Pacific Islander candidates must be college-bound high school seniors or college freshmen, have a 3.0 or better G.P.A. and an interest in the media (journalism, business, technical, public relations, or marketing).
