Gordon and Dr. Sonia Belliappa are pleased to announce that they offer two new eye care services: corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) and the KAMRA™ inlay. Corneal collagen cross-linking and the KAMRA™ inlay are effective treatments for keratoconus and presbyopia, respectively. Corneal Collagen Cross-linking: A Treatment for Keratoconus
Keratoconus is a degenerative condition related to the thinning of the cornea. With time, this thinning of the cornea can cause the cornea to bulge outward and create a cone, rather than round, shape. Left untreated, keratoconus results in blurry vision and light sensitivity.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved corneal collagen cross-linking for the treatment of keratoconus, and Dr. Gordon and Dr. Belliappa are the first eye doctors in the area to offer the procedure. Corneal collagen cross-linking involves the application of liquid riboflavin (B12) to the affected eye, followed by exposure to specially controlled ultraviolet light. This treatment approach helps strengthen the weakened cornea and reduces the amount of outward bulging of the cornea. Corneal collagen cross-linking can be combined with other treatments for keratoconus, as needed.
The KAMRA™ Inlay: A Treatment for Presbyopia
Presbyopia is a form of farsightedness caused by the natural aging process. As people reach middle age, the natural lenses of the eyes lose flexibility, making it harder to focus on nearby objects. This makes it difficult for patients to see objects up close.
The KAMRA™ inlay is a small, opaque ring that's smaller than a contact lens. The inlay is surgically placed through the cornea. Positioned in front of the pupil, it functions like the aperture on a camera, increasing the depth of focus on the treated eye. Only one KAMRA™ inlay is required during the 20-minute surgery. Following the procedure, patients will be able to see at various distances without the aid of bifocals, glasses, or other prescription lenses.
The FDA approved the KAMRA™ inlay for the treatment of presbyopia.
