Rand Group Announces Winners of Inaugural University Student Case Study Competition
Houston, TX (PRWEB) October 24, 2013 -- Rand Group is proud to announce the winners of their inaugural Risk Challenge, which allowed junior and senior students in both the Management Information Systems (MIS) and Accounting disciplines from the C. T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston to participate in a real life case study competition for a chance to win up to $1,200 in cash and a guaranteed interview for a career opportunity upon graduation.
The winning team comprised of 5 students: Jennifer Wang, Kelvin Foung, Ryan Price, Binh Nguyen and Jacqueline Alvarez. Two additional teams were awarded prizes for their hard work and dedication, and received $200 each.
The competition invited Bauer College students to explore the world of business management and IT consulting and put their academic skills to practical use. Student participation was voluntary, took place in addition to regular school hours and had no impact on academic standing; Rand Group was overly impressed by the number of students who participated.
49 students attended the kick-off meeting and started their training, and 29 students sat for the initial exam which occurred the following week. All 29 students passed the initial exam, and were moved to the second part of the competition where they were grouped in teams and given a case study to work on. The 6 teams worked independently on their case studies, and presented to a panel of judges from Rand Group on October 8, 2013. The judges included Ron Rand, President & CEO of Rand Group, and Suzie Turner and Sarika Krishnan, both Senior Managers at Rand Group.
The Risk Challenge offered students mentorship along with their study materials, and each person who passed the initial assessment was rewarded with $200. The winning team received an additional $1,000 each, along with a job interview, public recognition and a Rand Group Certificate of Achievement in Excellence. Additionally, all participants were able to apply the practical concepts and knowledge they learned during their studies to a real world business case.

This competition provided the Accounting and MIS students with the opportunity to experience the world of business consulting, while exposing us to some potential new hires. Offering the monetary reward demonstrated that we valued their commitment, as well as provided those students who showed exceptional skill something to help offset the cost of their education.
