New York, NY (PRWEB) August 29, 2016 -- The Randall's Island Park Alliance (RIPA) announced today that Randall’s Island Park will be the first New York City park to install sunscreen dispensers, providing park visitors with free and accessible sunscreen.
RIPA is teaming up with Bright Guard, LLC, a southern California-based company, and the Melanoma Foundation of New England (MFNE) to provide 25 sunscreen dispensers at Randall’s Island Park as part of a pilot program that will take place from Labor Day through November. If the pilot is successful, the program will be continued and expanded throughout the Park in the future. This pilot follows successful programs already in place in Boston and West Palm Beach.
Bright Guard Natural Sunscreen with SPF 30 provides effective, safe and broad spectrum protection (blocking UVA and UVB rays) with mineral-based active ingredients. Alex Beck, co-founder of Bright Guard, said, “We look forward to partnering with RIPA to provide New York City residents with free, easy access to sunscreen. This initiative embodies our company’s central purpose - to reduce the risks and effects of sun exposure and promote sun-safe lifestyles by providing sunscreen everywhere we live, work and play.” Each easily identifiable, brightly colored, automatic all-weather sunscreen dispenser features an infrared sensor, message area, unbreakable mirror, battery power, and high capacity refill good for 1000 applications. The pilot program will provide approximately 140,000 people with free sunscreen.
Aimee Boden, President of the Randall’s Island Park Alliance and NYC Park Administrator for Randall’s Island Park, commented, “Over 3.5 million people visit Randall’s Island Park each year and over 700,000 children play sports on our many athletic fields. It is important to make sure that everyone has access to appropriate skin protection.”
Boden added, “We are excited to be working with Bright Guard to be the first park in New York City to offer the public an easy preventive measure to reduce the risks and long term effects of sun exposure, while allowing for an active outdoors lifestyle in New York City.”
According to the MFNE, melanoma accounts for 5% of all skin cancers and 71% of all skin cancer deaths. It is estimated that one in every 50 Americans is diagnosed with melanoma. According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, and most cases are preventable through proper safety measures and avoidance of cosmetic ultraviolet exposure.
