Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 19, 2013 -- We joined Mayor Vincent C. Gray, Councilmember Muriel Bowser, Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Director Aguirre and District residents for the ribbon cutting of Raymond Recreation Center’s all-new Play DC playground.
You may be thinking to yourself, “Didn’t a ribbon cutting just take place at Raymond?” and the answer is yes. Last month, we gathered to cut the ribbon on the Raymond Recreation Center, but this week we cut the ribbon on the completion of the all-new Play DC playground.
Mayor Vincent C. Gray happily opened yesterday’s ribbon cutting ceremony by speaking about the beauty of the all-new Raymond Recreation Center and emphasizing the Play DC initiative is about constructing quality, fun play spaces that are accessible to all citizens without any limitations due to age and physical ability.
With the completion of the playground, Raymond is now another one of the fully loaded Recreation Center within Ward 4. As stated by DPR Director Aguirre, the purpose of the Playground Improvement Initiative, also known as Play DC, is to create new spaces that encourage play for all ages and physical ability. Play DC started with an ambitious goal of renovating more than 25 playgrounds across the District with projects in every Ward and we are happy to be getting closer to that goal with each ribbon cutting.
Another aspect of the Play DC is the fact that every project creates new jobs for District residents and local certified business enterprises (CBEs). DGS Deputy Director June Locker proudly stated that 27 District jobs were created and the District government partnered with more than 20 local CBEs in the Raymond Play DC project. In every construction project that DGS manages, our goal is to create new jobs for District residents and to afford new opportunities for local CBEs to partner with the government.
The ribbon cutting of the Raymond Recreation Center displayed the all-ages features of the all-new facility. Some of these features were an indoor gymnasium, fitness room, computer lab, senior room and several multipurpose rooms to name a few. Raymond Recreation Center’s indoor amenities have now been partnered with great outdoor features that include new play equipment, play courts, fitness zone, and a small artificial turf field.
