Readyforce’s 2013 Hacker Tour Announces Competitions for Engineering and Computer Science Students
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) July 25, 2013 -- Readyforce, the leading career network for engineering and computer science students, announced today the addition of two competitions as part of its 2013 Hacker Tour: the Hacker Madness Competition and the Top Campus Coder Challenge.
During the ten-week national bus tour and for the second year in a row, Readyforce’s Hacker Tour will represent hiring startup and technology companies like 10gen - the MongoDB Company, Venmo, Etsy, RetailMeNot, Inc., ZestFinance, Quixey, and Apollo Group at 35 of the nation’s top engineering and computer science campuses. In addition to the regular career fair visits, the company will host events where students can compete for the “Top Campus Coder” and “Top Hacker” titles at each school. Winners from these competitions are eligible for the grand prizes including a trip to San Francisco to tour companies and interview with sponsors.
Hacker Madness Competition
“For this year’s Hacker Tour, we want to showcase talent beyond what’s on a student’s resume,” states Alex Mooradian, Readyforce Founder and CEO. The Hacker Madness competition was inspired by Readyforce profiles like that of Jeremy Blum, Cornell University ‘12, M.Eng ‘13. Blum, who recently published Exploring Arduino, showcased a hack that enabled Cornell graduation attendees to control the colors displayed by LEDs on his graduation hat using their smartphones. “Graduation ceremonies can get a bit boring - I wanted to spice it up a bit by allowing the audience to control some super-bright LEDs with their phones. My cap confirmed the receipt of a color-request by tweeting out the new color, and setting the color accordingly. About 200 people controlled the color during the ceremonies,” states Blum.
To be eligible for the Hacker Madness Competition, students must have a Readyforce profile and submit a 2 minute demo video of their software or hardware project when the Hacker Tour arrives on campus. Readyforce will post videos of all the demos and will use online voting to determine the winners. Each school’s Top Hacker in both software and hardware will then qualify for the intercollegiate bracket to compete against winners at every other Hacker Tour stop. Students that submit a project will have their profiles highlighted to Tour sponsors and the overall winner of the Hacker Madness competition and official “Top Hacker” will win an all expenses paid trip to San Francisco.
Quixey Challenge to identify fastest coders on campus
To identify top coders at each Hacker Tour campus, Readyforce has partnered with tour sponsor Quixey, the search engine for apps, to host the sixty-second Quixey Challenge at each school. All students who fix a coding bug in less than 60 seconds will have their Readyforce profile included in a resume book to be distributed exclusively to tour sponsors. The student who successfully completes the challenge with the fastest time will earn their campus’ title as “Top Campus Coder,” and is guaranteed an interview with Quixey. Only 4% of students that have participated in previous competitions were able to successfully complete the challenge.
“At Quixey, we’ve had success identifying highly qualified candidates through the Quixey Challenge. Readyforce’s Hacker Tour will be a great opportunity for students at each campus to not only demonstrate their coding skills, but see how they compare against their peers. We look forward to meeting the next generation of engineering superstars who will, undoubtedly, continue to solve real-world problems through science and technology.” -- Liron Shapira, CTO, Quixey.
Early sponsors on the 2013 Hacker Tour include ZestFinance, 10gen - the MongoDB Company, Etsy, Quixey, and the Apollo Group, all returning sponsors from last year’s inaugural tour. Limited sponsorship spots are available and registration closes on July 31st, or until the spots are filled. The Hacker Tour will visit top technical schools such as Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, Cornell, Berkeley, and MIT.
