Real World Scholars Announces New Online Marketplace
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) June 05, 2017 -- Today, Real World Scholars (RWS), a nonprofit working to reimagine K-12 education through entrepreneurship, launched the EdCorps Marketplace, an online marketplace designed to showcase products created by young entrepreneurs (http://www.edcorps.org). The marketplace highlights the work of students and educators who have built and run EdCorps (web-based student-run businesses), in schools around the country. Currently, more than 200 companies are being run by 8,000 students in 33 states.
An EdCorp is a business run by student entrepreneurs in K-12 classroom as a way to learn real world skills. Students have full ownership over the entrepreneurial process and make and sell products and services that help them learn core subjects and competencies as well as the entrepreneurial mindset. All profits belong to the students; they often use them to re-invest in their company or support the local and global community. Each EdCorp receives funding, mentors, technology, and resources needed to grow their business. Although some EdCorps have earned tens of thousands of dollars in profits, the purpose of the EdCorps experience is to engage young people in early and frequent exposure to real world learning and the entrepreneurial process.
“The EdCorps Marketplace is a distinctive place to recognize, celebrate, and support student-run businesses,” said John Cahalin, co-founder of Real World Scholars. “EdCorps are helping us all reimagine learning as something that can empower young people to become contributors to their communities rather than simply consumers. This marketplace puts student work and youth entrepreneurship front and center.”
Here is a sampling of some of the EdCorps that are showcased at http://www.edcorps.org:
Hannah Candle Company, a student-run business created by 5th graders at Hannah Elementary School in Beverly, MA, sells soy-based and seasonal candles that they make in their classroom. Students use the profits from the business to support local nonprofits.
Broar Trojor Sketch Book Fashions, a t-shirt business that makes and sells its shirts out of the classroom, run by elementary students at Clark Elementary School in Webster Groves, MO.
Wicked Soap Company a successful homemade soap company that has donated both product and profits to local community organizations, run by a 10th grade chemistry class at High Tech High Media Arts in San Diego, CA.
“EdCorps around the country are giving students the opportunity to explore their interests, engage with their community, and produce high quality products that they can be proud of,” said Elyse Burden, co-founder of Real World Scholars. “This marketplace celebrates these students as creators, innovators, and changemakers.”
EdCorps educators and students have the richest learning experiences when there’s a strong connection between the classroom and the broader community. As a result, Real World Scholars is expanding the EdCorps Community, supporting additional classrooms in communities thirsty for innovation and impact in education.
