Recent Bariatric Study Reveals Good News for Diabetic Patients of All BMI Levels, Notes Dr. Michael Feiz

The article explains that, after analyzing the results of three separate bariatric surgery studies, researchers found that “patients with BMIs as low as 30 kg/m2 achieved similar benefit to those with BMIs between 30 and 35 kg/m2.” The data also showed that having surgery earlier into a type 2 diabetes diagnosis seems to be more effective than electing the procedure after suffering from type 2 diabetes after a longer period of time. According to Dr. Feiz, this information is extremely important for diabetic patients who may be considering bariatric surgery, and wondering whether to proceed with a procedure or wait for a later date.

Yet, he says that they must also weigh the cons of inaction, and seriously consider the implications of continuing along a path of obesity, which has been shown to be the second leading preventable cause of death behind smoking.
Dr. Feiz also explains that this data backs up the criteria for selecting who is eligible for bariatric surgery. While it is not unprecedented for exceptions to be made, Dr. Feiz explains that the majority of bariatric patients either have a BMI over 40, or a BMI of 35 and above along with multiple comorbidities, such as diabetes. Yet, he says that the fact that the study data showed positive effects in patients with BMI’s as low as 30 brings up an interesting topic of conversation surrounding who should be eligible for these procedures. Dr. Feiz explains that the primary reason why these minimum BMI levels are imposed is to discourage those who are only somewhat overweight from choosing bariatric surgery instead of attempting to lose weight with diet and exercise.
