Recently Improved MacKeeper's Anti-theft Feature Helped to Identify and Catch the Computer Thief
Sunnyvale, CA (PRWEB) November 04, 2014 -- As of November 2014, laptops and mobile devices continue to be one of the most attractive things for the thieves. The global technology research company Gartner Group reports that one laptop is stolen every 53 seconds in the United States. The independent research and data security company Ponemon Institute estimates that as many as 12,000 laptops are lost or go missing in US airports each week and 70 percent of those returned to the “lost and found” are never reclaimed.
Here is a real-life experience with laptop theft as described by Riccardo O. who lives and works in Brazil, Curitiba, state of Parana.
In June 2013 he left for vacation with his family and after they have arrived home they went to sleep. All their personal belongings, including laptops and cameras, were left unpacked. In the middle of the night their house was robbed.
"I woke up to drink some water when I felt that something has just happened in our house,” says Riccardo. “I realized that somebody has invaded my home and took my computers and cameras and all that I left on the floor.”
The first thing he did was call the police in an attempt to get his stuff recovered while it was 'hot'. Then he went online from another computer and logged in to his account to report the Mac as stolen.
"I have a program called Mackeeper with an anti-theft feature, and when it was turned on all I had to do was wait for the thief to go online," said Riccardo. When the program is activated it will use the webcam to take pictures of the next person who logs on the web. In addition to the picture of the the alleged thief, there is the physical address, IP address, and even the name of the wireless network the alleged thief uses.
Reportedly, the computer thief did not go online immediately, but he checked several times again to see if there was any activity. And that was it! The alleged thief had logged online and Riccardo had received webcam pictures which he gave to the police officers. 30-40 minutes later he got a call that this person was found at his home.
Reportedly, the thief turned out to be Luiz Fernando Garcia de Oliveira, 21 years old. According to Riccardo, all the stolen belongings were also found in various places through out the man's home. Coincidentally, the suspect lived just at the end of Riccardo's block, he was his neighbour. Suspect was charged with burglary and taken to the police department in Curitiba (for details refer to the legal case filed in the Ação Penal - Procedimento Ordinário, Court 2a. Vara Criminal - Comarca de Curitiba - Estado do Paraná, legal case number 2013.0015355-5). On Sept. 30th 2013 suspect was found guilty and sentenced to 6 months in Ação Penal jail (refer to the legal case number 2013.0015355-5).
